Myrhh Essential Oil

Species: Commiphora myrrha
Plant Family: 

Burseraceae.

Origins: 

Native to north east Africa and south west Asia.

Extraction: 

The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the plant.

Properties: 

Anti-catarrhal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent, balsamic, carminative, cicatrisant, emmenagogue, expectorant, fungicidal, sedative, digestive and pulmonary stimulant, stomachic, tonic, uterine and vulnerary.

Usage & methods of application: 

Blended in a carrier oil Myrrh is used to help with digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhoea, excessive wind and repressed appetite (gently massage the abdomen and stomach - always in a clockwise direction), to treat chest infections, cattarh, chronic bronchitis, colds and sore throats. 

It can be used as a Tincture to treat mouth ulcers and gingivitis and as a gargle for sore throats but advice should always be sought from a professional aromatherapist before taking any essential oils internally and great caution should be employed. 

When burned or vaporised Myrrh is again used in cases of chest infections, cattarh, colds and bronchitis. It's an expectorant so is used to clear congested chests and is also antiseptic and antiviral so may be used in cases of infections and glandular fevers.

You may find that Myrrh blends particularly well with Benzoin, Frankincense, Lavender, Sandalwood and Clove.
