This week we’re all about Winter Skincare! As the cold weather and harsh winds batter our skin, find out how natural products can offer protection and nourishment.

These wet and windy days can be a real problem for the face. Red noses, sore lips and dry skin are all common problems at this time of year.

As well as using your daily moisturiser, there are some secret weapons you can add to your morning skin regime in the form of essential oils. Simply adding a few drops of oil to your face cream is a great way of incorporating aromatherapy into your every life and it can make all the difference to your skin.

The great thing about using essential oils in skin care is that you can tailor your choices to suit what’s best for you based upon your skin type and preferences. Just one or two drops can be enough to brighten the skin and give that added nourishment to your skin.

As we’re focusing this week on moisturising, we thought we’d highlight three essential oils and absolutes which are highly regarded for their moisturising properties. All should be diluted to 1% (1 drop of essential oil to every 5ml of base) in a carrier oil, base cream or lotion.

Our Plain Body Lotion is perfect for this blend as it absorbs quickly into the skin and so helps the essential oils to penetrate the skin and work from the inside out.

(1)    Neroli – Often used to treat mature skin. Its regenerating effects help soothe and smooth marks, scars and wrinkles.

(2)    Rose Otto – Nourishing and rejuvenating. Rose oil works wonders in reducing redness on inflamed and irritated skin.

(3)    Patchouli – Love or hate the aroma, Patchouli oil is valuable in regenerating the skin. It can help to speed up the healing process of scars and infections. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it excellent for soothing dry and damaged skin.

It is the responsibility of the end user to ensure that they have followed the relevant safety protocols and that they are aware of any possible side effects before use. We always advise that a skin patch test is carried out before full usage of any natural product whether purchased from ourselves or elsewhere.

If you are making a water based formulation for yourself or to sell then it’s very important that extremely high levels of hygiene are adhered to. Please also be aware that water based products will require some sort of preservative to ensure that they don’t spoil too rapidly. Once water has been included in a formulation bacteria can quickly form and spoil the finished product if preservatives are not used.

Some essential oils can be particularly hazardous for pregnant women. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant then please ensure that you have carefully checked that the essential oil(s) you plan to use are suitable. We recommend that essential oils are avoided altogether during the first trimester of pregnancy. Products should be stored out of reach of children. If you’re planning to use essential oils during pregnancy or with babies or children then you should consult with a professional Aromatherapist first.

Some essential oils are flammable and can be hazardous to the environment. Please ensure they are correctly stored and are disposed of responsibly. We recommend that essential oils are never taken internally and that they should not be applied to the skin around the eyes and mouth.
