Autumnal Aromas in the Home

Autumnal Home Aromas

Now that the colder weather and shorter days are drawing in, this time of year is the perfect time to create a warm and comforting environment at home. Simple things such as lighting some candles, snuggling up with your duvet and enjoying a warm drink or playing some music can really change the mood and create a cosy and inviting living space to lift spirits and make Autumn a more enjoyable experience.

One of the most effective ways we can do this through the use of home aromas. The power of smell should never be underestimated and it is well known throughout history how particular fragrances can evoke strong emotional reactions. The beautiful floral aromas of oils such as Lavender can help induce deep relaxation (you can almost picture the rolling lavender fields on a warm summer’s day).  The bright and cheerful aromas of the citrus oils such as Orange can really lift spirits and promote feelings of happiness and joy. Inhale the beautifully sweet aroma and picture yourself walking through a beautiful citrus orchard in the south of Spain.

We can really use this to our advantage and make the most of ‘happy’ scents or aromas we may associate with good memories on a personal level. A certain scent may remind us of a holiday or of a special person. The olfactory system (the part of the brain which receives information about odours) has an incredibly intimate relationship with the areas of the brain that deal with emotion. This is why aroma can have such a profound effect on our mood, our memory and our emotional wellbeing.
Here’s a few tips on how to use warming and seasonal scents to align our mood and senses with our environment and help promote feelings of warmth and security.

Home Aromas

Aromatherapy candles

A simple yet effective way to fragrance your home is using scented candles. Lighting a candle on a cold, dark winters evening can be a lovely way to create a warm and cosy atmosphere in the home.
Here at Amphora we’ve recently relaunched our new range of all-natural aromatherapy candles made from essential oils and sustainably sourced plant wax.   Beautifully presented, they make the perfect gift as well as a great addition to your own home.
From festive and fruity Orange & Clove to subtle and refreshing Citrus Tonic, there are more than twenty different all-natural fragrances to choose from, but some of the warming and seasonal candles which are especially suited to this time include:
Cinnamon – stimulating and energizing. The perfect scent to warm the senses.

Limeleaf and Ginger – zesty and spicy; a unique combination of energizing scents.
Juniper and Pine – fresh and fragrant; to help revive and restore.
Bergamot – sweet and fruity to help lift spirits during the dark evenings.
Orange and Clove – sweet and spicy; to get you in the festive mood.

Natural Aroma Reed Diffusers

One of the most convenient ways to scent your home safely (no naked flames to worry about). Natural aroma reed diffusers are becoming an ever more popular way of filling your home with your favourite scents. Long-lasting and subtly fragrant, our natural reed diffusers absorb essential oil blends through natural reeds, creating a gorgeous ambience.  And, because they don’t require a candle or plug in, they are safe to use and leave unattended (an ideal option for students living in halls).

We have a great selection here at Amphora; all of which contain a gorgeous blend of natural essential oils to help lift your spirits and make your home smell wonderful. Chose from scents such as calming Lavender, energizing Basil, Bay and Lime or refreshing Citrus Tonic.

Traditional Oil Burners

For the more traditional option, you can enjoy the great benefits of essential oils by diffusing them through either a candle lit burner or an electric fragrancer.
Simply add water and a few drops of essential oil to the bowl, light the candle and enjoy the aromas as they are slowly released (but make sure you never leave it unattended).
It’s a great way to get creative with different blends and you can tailor the aroma to suit your mood.
Here are just a few ideas:

Warming blend – 3 drops Orange, 2 Cinnamon and 1 Ginger
Uplifting blend – 3 drops Grapefruit, 2 Lemongrass, 1 Rosemary
Relaxing blend – 3 drops Lavender 2 Sandalwood Amyris and 1 Ylang Ylang.

Here are just a few ideas of how to make the most of fragrance in your home. Thank you for taking the time to read this and we hope you’ll stay tuned for more free tips and advice from the Amphora team.

Relax and Unwind with Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is widely loved and renowned for being one of the most valuable essential oils to help us relax and reduce stress levels. Incorporating the use of Lavender oil into your day to day life can be incredibly beneficial in so many different areas.

With the summer school holidays reaching an end, you may find yourselves under pressure to ensure the children are all ready and prepared to return back to school. You may be a student about to embark on your new journey to university or if you’re like me, you may have started getting concerned about the autumn days drawing in, with less daylight hours and cooler weather. Aromatherapy can help us embrace these changes positively and help beat feelings of anxiety during this time of transition. New beginnings and the autumn months are after all, something to celebrate and it can be a really beautiful time of year .

Because stress is often argued to be one of the roots causes of minor health problems, sleep deprivation and other problems that arise in our lives. This is what makes the practice of aromatherapy so incredibly beneficial to us, and what’s more it can be so easy to incorporate to your daily routines, so you don’t have to spend a lot of time preparing and organising it. In this blog, we’re going to look at just a few ways in which you can use Lavender essential oil in and around the home to help create a relaxing and stress free environment for you and your family to enjoy.

(1) Lavender before bedtime to help induce a good night’s sleep – one of the classic but really effective ways of using Lavender is to add a few drops to your pillow below bed time. Alternatively, you can add 2-3 drops to a cotton ball and place it inside the pillow case to avoid staining the covers. The scent of Lavender is renowned for helping centre our thoughts and slow down a racing mind (often the key cause of sleep deprivation).

(2) Use it to calm nerves – new beginnings such as the first day back at school can be a nerve wracking time! Lavender has on many occasions been shown to help soothe nervous tension and ease us into a calmer and more stable emotional state. If you’re a new university student, try keeping a bottle with you to use as and when needed. For younger children, we’d recommend to always ensure they are supervised by an adult – a few drops on a handkerchief or tissue would be a good alternative in the case of children.

(3) Diffuse Lavender to fill your home with its relaxing scent – using a traditional oil burner or electric fragracner, you can vaporize the calming oil to create a stress free atmosphere at home. Perfect to help you unwind after a busy day (to help calm excitable children!). here are a few ideas for relaxing Lavender blends you can try at home:

• 3 drops Bergamot, 2 drops Lavender, 1 drop Clary Sage
• 3 drops Lavender, 2 drops Sweet Orange, 1 drop of Ylang Ylang
• 3 drops Lavender, 2 drops Chamomile Roman and 1 drop of Geranium.

(4) Ease away your worries with a relaxing bath – an aromatherapy bath will be beneficial not only for relaxing the mind, but also helping release tension in the muscles; a great choice if you’ve been on your feet all day. A simple, yet incredibly effective relaxing bath recipe could be adding 2-4 drops of Lavender and a cup of Epsom salts to a tub of warm water (alternatively, you could use this as a foot spa and relax whilst reading or watching a film!). The Epsom salts and Lavender work wonderfully together to help you feel restored after a stressful day.

(5) Add a few drops to your shampoo, shower gel and body lotion – a lovely simple way of enjoying the benefits of Lavender essential oil is to simply incorporate it into your morning or evening shower routine. You can also add a few drops to the shower floor and enjoy the aroma as it diffuses through the steam. A great alternative if you don’t have the time for a bath.

There you have just a few great ideas on how to make the most of this wonderful oil. Taking time to unwind and relax is more important than we give it credit for; especially for those of us with a never ending list of tasks. Having some quality time to relax and unwind can help us to face the world with a fresh mind and ease ourselves into new situations. Using essential oils may not work miracles, but it can certainly offer a helping hand. Whether this be helping us get a good nights’ sleep, easing feelings of anxiety or simply helping us to create a warm and inviting space in our own homes where we can enjoy spending quality ‘me’ time; using essential oils to relax is a hugely enjoyable way to reap the many benefits of their properties they have to offer.

Thank you for taking the time to read our blog, we hope you have found this useful and make sure you keep an eye out for more FREE tips and advice to come.

Lavender and Skincare

Just one of the many versatile uses of Lavender is its great skin care benefits. It is highly praised for its ability to treat various skin conditions from outbreaks of acne, to eczema and even help smooth wrinkles. This makes it an excellent oil to offer great benefits to everyone, no matter what their skin type. It is also one of the gentler of essential oils, meaning it is a good choice for those with more sensitive skin such as children.
Here are just a few of the wonderful uses of Lavender in skincare.

Natural acne treatment

Lavender is renowned for its natural anti-bacterial and anti—inflammatory properties. This makes it an incredibly useful natural acne treatment. Diluted Lavender applied directly to the affected area can help to soothe inflammation and reduce any redness
Use a carrier oil such as Virgin Coconut oil to dilute Lavender and apply to the skin.

Alternatively, you can try a ready to use Lavender Gel which is safe to apply directly to the skin. Its soothing effects help to cool the skin and reduce redness. Our Lavender Gel from AA Skincare comes in a handy pump bottle, making it more hygienic for application and minimizing waste.

Soothe Burns and insect bites

Lavender is most definitely an essential oil you want to have in your first aid box or better still; take a bottle with you when going away to help treat bites, burns and stings. Lavenders’ ability to treat burns was famously discovered by French Chemist Rene Maurice back in the 1900’s when he burned his hand whilst working in the family perfumery business. After sinking his hand into a vat of Lavender, he experienced some extraordinary results which helped heal the burns and even prevent scarring. Although it is one of the gentler oils, Lavender should still be diluted before applying to the skin; our ready to use Lavender Roll on is ideal for those of you always on the go or to take with you on holiday.
Lavender can help reduce swelling, reduce itchiness and it can also act as a natural insect repellent to help deter any further insect bites, so it really is a handy oil to keep in your wash bag.

Natural toner

Lavender is renowned for helping helping boost circulation. Its anti-inflammatory properties also enables it to soothe redness so if you’re an acne sufferer or have spent a lot of time in the sun this summer, using Lavender as part of your skin care regime can help reduce redness and leave it feeling soothed and refreshed.

Lavender water (hydrolate) is the natural by-product of the steam distillation process used to extract the Lavender essential oil. Floral waters make the perfect natural toner; they are incredibly refreshing to use and you can rest assure that you’re putting no nasty chemicals onto your skin. Simply use a cotton pad to gently wipe over the face or if you’d prefer, you can decant the water into an atomizer bottle and spay over the face to refresh and revive the skin.

There you have a few ideas on how to incorporate Lavender into your skincare regime. Its wonderfully versatile properties makes it an incredibly beneficial oil for most skin types. What’s more, its beautiful aroma makes it enjoyable to use; offering calming and relaxing properties to help reduce stress and release tension.

Thank you reading, we hope you found this useful. Stay tuned for more tips and advice to come as part of our Spotlight on Lavender month.
