Aromatic Asthma Relief

Asthma can be a serious condition which should first and foremost be treated by your doctor. However, pure essential oils can help too. Click to read more.

Aromatherapy should in no way be used to treat an asthma attack, nor should it be substituted for medication. Having said that, it can play a valuable role in helping asthma sufferers to feel at ease and soothe some of the symptoms associated with it.

Here we have a blend of pure essential oils which would be ideal to have on a burner or electric vaporiser to help ease symptoms of asthma whilst also filling your space with a beautiful, relaxing aroma.

5 Drops Lavender – It’s the gentle sedative and anti-inflammatory properties of Lavender which make it useful for treating asthma.

3 Drops Geranium – An anti-spasmodic oil. Its sweet floral scent is known for lifting spirits and relaxing which in turn helps slow down and regulate breathing.

2 Drops Peppermint – Another oil with anti-spasmodic properties to help relax the muscles in the respiratory tract. Its invigorating scent clears and decongests the airways.

You can either vaporise this beautiful blend or add to a base cream or carrier oil and gently massage over the chest.

Citrus Oil Harvest Time

Right now there is a plant, fruit or flower growing somewhere in the world that will eventually provide an essential oil you’ll use sometime next year. Click to read more.

I always enjoy the thought that at any given time of year the beautiful plants, flowers and fruits that eventually become pure essential oils are busy growing.

At Amphora we source our oils from trusted suppliers all over the world so at any one time there are plants growing and being harvested ready to be processed to extract our gorgeous essential oils.

For example, right now our Italian suppliers are harvesting some of their citrus crops. The Lemon harvesting season has just started, the Mandarin harvest is well underway having started in early October and they’ll start harvesting Bergamot in mid-November. The Orange harvest starts later in December.

Lemon is a bountiful fruit. Italy alone produces between 650 and 700 tonnes of Lemon oil every year. This helps to explain why it’s one of the cheaper oils. It’s easy to grow, relatively easy to produce the essential oil and most of the fruit is used in one way or another (for food and drinks etc) so there is very little wastage.

Bergamot is not so plentiful. Only 100 tonnes of the oil is produced each year in Italy – mostly in the beautiful Calabria region. A similar amount of Mandarin oil is produced each year.

Mandarin is an interesting oil because different varieties are produced depending on the time of year that the fruit is harvested. Those that are processed earlier in the season produce Green Mandarin (the colour comes from the natural chemicals in the peel). Those fruits that are harvested later in the season produce Red Mandarin.

We sell both varieties at Amphora. The green variety has a sweet, sharp aroma while the red is still sweet but with a gentler edge. Mandarin is known as the Children’s Oil in France and is one of the few oils which is safe to use with children due to its gentle nature.

You can read more about our citrus oils in the Essential Oils section of this website.

The fruits being harvested at the moment will be processed in the coming weeks and we’ll receive a batch of the resulting oils early next year.

Natural Chest Infection Relief

Pure essential oils can help to ease the symptoms caused by chest infections and may even help to speed recovery. Click to learn more.

The blend below can be used in a burner but is probably more effective when used in massage or a hot bath. The essential oils will be absorbed by your system so their health-giving properties can get to work at the source of the problem.

This soothing and protecting blend can help you to breathe more easily and calm a chest infection. Blend in 10mls of a carrier oil (Sweet Almond or Grapeseed for example) then massage gently across the chest. Alternatively, you can add the blend to a tablespoon of milk and put in a hot bath for a boosting soak.

•         1 Drop Marjoram – Bactericidal and analgesic, this oil can help soothe the pain and discomfort associated with colds and chesty coughs whilst helping fight off infection with its antiviral properties.

•         2 Drops Tea Tree – Well known for its expectorant, antiviral and antimicrobial properties, Tea Tree oil will get to work on the nasty bacteria that caused the infection in the first place.

•         1 Drop Frankincense – a valuable oil in maintaining lung health. Frankincense is useful for soothing coughs, clearing phlegm and providing relief from any congestion of the lungs and nasal passages. It is also a wonderful oil for relaxation and meditation. This can help during times of sickness to ease tension and in turn relax the breathing passages.

•         1 Drop Cypress – thought to be useful in treating cases of persistent coughs, bronchitis and asthma. Has good antiviral properties too.

Bonfire Night Pet Soother

Bonfire night is great fun for humans but it can be a very distressing evening for dogs and cats. Essential oils can help to keep them calm. Click to learn more.

Fireworks displays seem to be increasingly popular. Always a popular event for families, it's worth remembering that your pet probably won't enjoy it quite as much. Dogs and cats can be very upset by the bangs and whistles and this can cause problems for the owners (and neighbours!) too.

Try this simple all natural solution to help keep your pets a little calmer and less stressed while the fireworks are going off. Both oils are perfectly safe to use and your pets will benefit from the calming aroma in the same way as we humans do. The soothing properties enter through the nose and get to work directly on the part of the brain that deals with emotions and feelings.

Add the following to your burner or vaporiser or add to warm water in a saucer suspended over a tealight candle. Make sure it's placed somewhere well out of reach of the animals.

1 drop Lavender – calming and soothing.

3 drops Chamomile Roman – relaxing and a great stress reliever.

Natural Sinusitis Relief

Essential oils can be really effective in relieving the symptoms of sinusitis. Click here for an all natural blend to help clear up this horrible condition.

Certain oils contain antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which can make a real difference to the pain and discomfort caused by the condition and so help to improve your overall wellbeing.

Sinusitis can be brought on by a cold or flu outbreak or just develop as a problem in its own right. It often results in inflammation of the nasal passages. This can cause symptoms such as nasal congestion, headaches, a possible fever and often a nasty cough. Severe sinusitis can be extremely debilitating. If symptoms persist for more than a week then medical advice should be sought.

It's possible to treat this nasty infection naturally using aromatherapy - try the following blend in a steam inhalation. Add the oils to a bowl of steaming water, cover your head with a towel and breathe deeply for 2-3 minutes. For severe cases repeat 3-4 times a day.

•         2 Drops Rosemary – this will help ease headaches and other pains. Rosemary is a stimulant which aids circulation and helps get oxygen to the brain. This also makes it an excellent choice for headache relief too.

•         1 Drop Peppermint – invigorating peppermint oil will help open the airways and ease headache pains. Menthol, the key active ingredient in the oil is thought to be useful in reducing sinus and chest congestion.

•         1 Drop Thyme – this immune boosting oil is often used to treat colds and infections. It’s a natural expectorant so will help release phlegm and ease the healing process.

•         2 Drops Eucalyptus – inhalation of this refreshing oil will allow its antiseptic properties to get to work on clearing infection and opening the airways.

Alternatively you can add this blend to a hot bath. This will give the added benefit of easing aching muscles and joints. Add to a tablespoon of milk to help the oils disperse in the bath.

Breathe Easy the Natural Way

Pure essential oils can make a big difference to our health at this time of year. As the temperature drops and colds & flu start to spread it's a good idea to regularly burn essential oils to keep those nasty bugs at bay.

This week we’ll give you some blends aimed at tackling various issues and problems of the respiratory tract. Although it is in no way a cure, there are many ways in which aromatherapy can help treat flare ups of colds, flu or allergies which may cause us to become bunged up and restrict our breathing. As well as clearing a blocked nose and aiding breathing essential oils can work in various other to act as an anti-inflammatory, an antispasmodic or an antiviral. This may help to kill off bacteria which can be the root cause of infections.

Decongestant Blend

That feeling of being bunged up is never nice. The symptoms are usually medically harmless but they can be very irritating, affecting our sleep and interfering with our day to day wellbeing.

The following blend can be used as a steam inhalation to clear the airways. Add to a bowl of steaming water and cover head with a towel. Bend over the bowl and take deep breaths for 2-3 minutes. Alternatively you can add the oils to a burner or vaporiser and benefit from the properties of the oils over a couple of hours. If you'd like to burn the blend for longer simply refresh when the initial oils have evaporated.

·         2 Drops Pine – its fresh aroma is primarily used to treat respiratory infections. Its anti-inflammatory, expectorant and antiseptic properties make it useful for treating sinus infections and help to clear the airways.

·         2 Drops Eucalyptus – often the first choice of essential oils for treating cold and flu symptoms and there’s a good reason for that. It’s a natural decongestant, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. This makes it the ideal remedy for treating sore throats, colds, coughs and nasal congestion.

·        1 Drops Tea Tree – the ultimate antiviral oil! Inhaling its powerful properties will help improve the recovery time of sinus infections and colds. Inhalation will help loosen phlegm and clear the sinuses, allowing you to breathe more freely.

All 3 of these oils work well on their own but as with many essential oils they're even better when blended. This allows the properties of the oils to work together to produce even more effective results.

Natural Immune Boosters - Ravensara

As the colder months draw in it’s important to ensure we keep our immune system in tip top condition. This helps us to ward off breakouts of colds and flu.

Getting a decent amount of sleep, ensuring you’re getting the nutrition you need and staying hydrated are the key fundamentals in helping you stay healthy and happy.

There’s a lot of love for Ravensara here at Amphora! Ravensara originates from Madagascar where it is sometimes known as ‘the oil that heals’ and there’s a good reason for that – it’s used to treat respiratory problems, has excellent anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-depressant properties.

A lovely blend to boost immunity and promote feelings of joy, you can try the following in your burner, vaporiser or in a lovely warm bath:

3 Drops Ravensara – immune boosting, strengthening and invigorating. Ravensara is often used as an alternative to Tea Tree and Eucalyptus for cold and flu treatments. It has similar healing and protective properties but with a more appealing aroma.

2 Drops Lavender – anti-bacterial, anti-viral and helpful in clearing the breathing passages. Its calming and balancing effect will help you relax and get a good night’s rest (not always easy if you’re feeling bunged up!).

2 Drops Bergamot – one of the most renowned and loved oils for treating depression or a low mood. Bergamot’s fresh, sweet, citrussy scent is incredibly uplifting and its anti-viral properties will fill help fight off air-borne bacteria.

Natural Immune Boosters - Tea Tree

As the colder months draw in it’s important to ensure we keep our immune system in tip top condition. This helps us to ward off breakouts of colds and flu.

Getting a decent amount of sleep, ensuring you’re getting the nutrition you need and staying hydrated are the key fundamentals in helping you stay healthy and happy.

Tea tree is one of the most widely acknowledged antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial oils. Definitely the number one oil to have in your first aid kit!

To help keep viruses from spreading you can use Tea Tree in your burner or vaporiser. Just add 4-6 drops for all round protection. You might also like to add a couple of drops of your favourite citrus oil to augment the aroma. We like Bergamot but any of the citrus oils will work well.

Natural Immune Boosters - Peppermint

As the colder months draw in it’s important to ensure we keep our immune system in tip top condition. This helps us to ward off breakouts of colds and flu.

Getting a decent amount of sleep, ensuring you’re getting the nutrition you need and staying hydrated are the key fundamentals in helping you stay healthy and happy. Using pure essential oils is also very effective.

One of the most invigorating and refreshing oils, Peppermint oil is great to keep handy during the colder months. Its natural antiseptic & anti-inflammatory properties make it great for keeping the airways clear and its invigorating aroma helps to avoid and clear congestion, allowing you to breathe more effectively.

Peppermint is more concentrated than a lot of other oils so only small amounts are required.

To help you breathe deep and clear your sinuses, try adding the following blend to burner / vaporiser or a hot bath. If adding to the bath try blending with a tablespoon of milk to help it disperse.

2 drops Peppermint – soothing, cooling and clearing.
2 drops Tea Tree – stimulating, refreshing and energizing.
1 drop Rosemary – protecting, strengthening and uplifting.
