Here at Amphora we sell two different types of Floral Water, Hydrosols and Hydrolates. There isn’t a strict definition that is broadly accepted by the industry but we say that a Hydrosol is an essential oil dissolved in water while a Hydrolate is the water recovered from the distillation of essential oils.
We sell Jasmin Water and Orange Blossom Floral Water as Hydrosols, while our Lavender Water, Geranium Water, Rose Water and Chamomile Water are all Hydrolates.
Both Hydrolates and Hydrosols are ideal for natural skincare and are especially suited to toning and refreshing the skin.
Lavender and Chamomile Floral waters are very gentle and soothing so are perfect for skin that is inflamed, sore or irritated.
They can be used after cleansing to help remove any dirt that may be left on the skin and to help refresh and calm your skin before applying moisturiser.
You can also add a couple of drops of Essential Oil to your Floral Water to help benefit your skin even further. Here are a couple of suggestions:
Combination, Oily Skin Toner:
200ml Lavender Floral Water
3 Drops Geranium Essential Oil
3 Drops Cypress Essential Oil
4 Drops Lemon Essential Oil
Sensitive, Irritated Skin:
200ml Chamomile Floral Water
10 Drops Rose Essential Oil
Place the blend in a bottle with a spritz or spray attachment. Spray on to your face and then gently remove with a cotton wool pad. Repeat as necessary.
Floral Waters can be used directly onto the skin but it is always important to carry out a skin patch test before full application (this is even more important if you’ve added essential oils that you’ve never used before). Irritation or reactions are unlikely and only a tiny percentage of people are affected but it's worth making sure you're not one of them.
Simply apply a small amount to the inside of your elbow and keep an eye on the area over the next 24 hours. If irritation occurs rinse the area with warm water and don't use the product on the rest of your body. If you have added any essential oils to the water you may need to test each oil individually to find out which is causing the reaction.
