I think we can say spring is officially in full swing (hooray!). The sun is shining, the daffodils are out and the days are most certainly lighter and brighter – long may it continue! Spring is a time to celebrate new beginnings.

It’s a great chance to get out in the garden planting seeds and to enjoy all the beautiful flowers and wildlife that bloom during this gorgeous time of year.

So these past few weeks we’ve given you some tips and advice on how to incorporate the many uses of essential oils into your spring cleaning regime around the house. These next few weeks, we thought we’d give you some ideas on how to create your own detoxifying salt scrubs using essential oils and 100% natural ingredients.

Using a salt scrub to gently exfoliate the skin is a great way to give yourself an all over spring clean! You can get creative in using all sorts of different essential oils and carrier oils to suit your mood and skin type. They’re incredibly easy to create and it means you can enjoy the benefits of a spa treatment in the comfort of your own home!

There are many great benefits of regularly using a salt scrub. They help improve blood flow, can help reduce signs of cellulite and their exfoliating properties leave your skin with a gorgeous, healthy glow! What’s more, when essential oils are added, it makes the experience incredibly relaxing and reviving. Who needs an expensive spa trip when you can do a great job in your own home?

(1) Invigorating and energizing Grapefruit & Peppermint salt scrub.

For this scrub you will need:

• A container to store it in (Kilmer jars are ideal).
• 1 cup of Epsom salts
• 4 table spoons of a carrier oil of your choice (coconut, sweet almond or grapeseed for example)
• 20 drops of Grapefruit essential oil
• 10 drops of Peppermint essential oil

Simply combine the ingredients in a mixing bowl (best to add the carrier oil and salts first then add the drops of essential oil). Give it a good stir then carefully spoon it into your storage container.
This is a really lovely scrub to use either in the morning or as a midafternoon energy boost.

The combination of peppermint and grapefruit offer a pick me up with their uplifting and stimulating properties. It can be just what you need to kickstart your day. These are two of my all-time favorite essential oils. Grapefruit oil is packed with antioxidants which help regenerate the skin, whilst peppermint oil works wonders on soothing tired muscles and combating any feelings of mental fogginess!
To use your salt scrub, simply dampen the skin and apply to the skin with circular motions to help exfoliate the skin and stimulate circulation. Gently wash off with warm water and enjoy the energizing aromas of the essential oils!

Tip: ensure you hose down the shower floor after use as the oil residue can leave it slippery!

It is important to always carry out a patch test before using any natural ingredients you haven’t used before. Just apply a small amount of the blend to the inside on your elbow and keep an eye on the area over the next 24 hours.

If any irritation does occur rinse the area with cool water. If you have blended a few essential oils together you may need to test each one individually to find out which is causing your skin to react.
